When is the Best Time to Paint?

When it comes to painting, there are several variables to consider. One of the most important of these is when to start. The best time to do exterior painting is normally between late March and late October. Interior painting can be done year-round. The reason for this time frame comes down to temperature, weather, and efficiency. These factors determine when to paint.

Temperature

There is a reason you don’t see many professional painters out working in the dead of Winter. Sometimes, it can simply be too cold to paint. Due to the chemical properties in paint, it struggles to adhere to anything when the temperature is under 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If you were to ignore this and paint anyway, sure your paint might stay on, but not for long. Projects painted in the proper temperatures have a significantly higher quality and lifespan. Unless you absolutely cannot wait (which isn’t likely), do yourself a favor and get your painting done in the Spring or Summer.

Weather

Bad weather can be an issue at any time of year, but especially in the colder months. It’s one thing to get a little rain, but snow and ice? These don’t mix well with paint. Ice doesn’t exist above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so that’s the first red flag. Then that ice covers the paint and stops it from drying quickly or evenly. Painters enjoy warm, sunny days with no rain and minimal wind. This will contribute to a quality final product.

Efficiency

The last reason to wait to paint is for the general efficiency. Climbing ladders, cleaning brushes and removing gutters can be twice as hard in the Winter. Ask any professional painter, they will tell you they would much rather work in the heat than in the extreme cold. Really any kind of work like this is better handled in the warm weather. Not only is it easier, but it’s also faster and safer all things considered.
