Franklin, Indiana is a historic city in the middle of the state. It is in Johnson County. Native Americans from the Miami, Delaware, and Shawnee tribes were some of the first people to live in the area that would become Franklin.

The city was founded in 1823, and it was named for Benjamin Franklin, who was one of the people who started the United States. A man named Jacob Whetzel built the first permanent home in the area. He did this by building a cabin near where Jefferson and Water streets meet today. In the years that followed, more people moved to the area and started farms and businesses.
