How To Keep Paint Off Of Surfaces You Do Not Want It On

Are you a messy painter? Tired of finding specs of paint on appliances or trim? Here are a few tips to help you prevent getting paint on surfaces you don’t want painted.  If you choose to paint yourself, instead of hiring a professional painting company, here are some tips:

  • Drops- Paint drops are generally used when using a brush or roller on walls in a carpeted area. The drop is used to prevent having paint coming in contact with the carpet. Sometimes when rolling out paint on to a wall if you roll the roller too fast specs of paint can fly off and wind up anywhere. Using a drop over carpet in any room is a must to keep your carpet looking great. Also for kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, appliances, etc, they have plastic drops you can use to ensure paint will not get on your coffee table, inn tables, appliances, or any other household items you may have.
  • Masking Tape- When painting trim by your carpet a drop can not always be used. Sometimes the drop is too thick and will cover some of the trim. In this case masking tape is a great item to prevent getting any trim paint on your carpet. Simply take a strip of the tape and try and get it underneath the trim as much as possible while applying it to the carpet. This way while painting your trim if your brush strokes go lower than the trim the paint will be on the tape and not your carpet.
  • Blue Painters Tape- Blue painters tape is great to cover up trim when painting the walls and making your cut lines. The blue painters tape can be found at your local Sherwin Williams store. When prepping a homes interior use the blue painters tape on all trim around door frames, baseboard, crown molding, or any other kind of trim that may be in the same area in which you are painting. Make sure that your tape lines are evenly placed on the trim otherwise, when the paint dries and you can remove the tape, you may see unevenness in your cut lines. Using the blue painters tape on your trim makes for an easier and quicker way for you to paint around your trim in a neat fashion.
  • Warm Wet Rags- When painting it is always wise to have a rag with you to wipe up any paint that may have gotten on any surface you don’t want it to be on. Even when using paint drops and other materials it is still possible to mess up and accidentally paint something. It is beneficial and easier to clean up paint when it is still wet. If you have gotten some paint on your carpet, soak your rag in warm water and clean up. Using a warm and wet rag will keep the paint moist so that is doesn’t dry and wont stain your carpet. Always have a rag handy when you are painting.
  • Consider hiring a professional painting company – If you want to hire a professional painting company, consider giving us a call.

These are just a few tips to help keep your painting project neat and clean. Remember to not rush through your project and go at a steady pace so that any accidents that can occur are less likely to happen.
