The Staining Process
The normal process for staining new trim involves cleaning the trim. If the surface is not clean, the stain will not absorb properly leaving the surface splotchy. From there, apply stain and wipe off the excess followed by the putting on the first coat of polyurethane. After the material dries, it will be lightly sanded to create a smooth finish and second coat of polyurethane is applied and third if necessary.
Obviously, there are factors that can change the above process. Sometimes the trim is installed between the staining steps and the polyurethane steps.
When staining trim, there are quite a few factors that need to be accounted for:
- Is it new trim or previously stained trim?
- What are you trying to make it look like? Do you want a shiny new look? Do you want a flat – worn look? What look are you going for?
- Is the trim going to be stained hanging, or stained on the ground or on stands?
- Are you trying to match current stain? Or are you making a new stain altogether?
This is more tricky. There are too many variables to list a process on this page. The best thing to do is to call a professional painting contractor to take a look at your project on each instance basis. We would be happy to give you our professional opinion on any surface.
