Deck Paint Maintenance
We typically only recommend painting a deck when a deck has already been painted. This is because the paint is better suited on home exteriors such as non-wooden siding, railings, trim and frames – any area that isn’t subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Once a deck is painted, it’s important to have it re-painted on an ongoing basis. We will work with you to maintain your painted deck’s appearance and use the highest quality products to help ensure it remains functional and durable. And, since latex paint can make the surface of a deck slippery, we can put in shark grit, a safety sand additive, from time to time to help reduce the slippery factor and improve the safety aspect of your deck.
How Paint Affects Your Deck
Latex paint on decks covers somewhat like a band-aid. Since the majority of the surface on a deck is horizontal, the painted latex “lays” on top the deck. When the deck holds water, the paint may aid in trapping moisture into the wood. As the deck boards expand and contract with changes in temperatures and weather conditions – especially in the case of extreme temperatures and large amounts of snow and rain – the paint can disintegrate. Then once the paint gets poked or scraped with a snow shovel, water will get into the wood and push out like a water balloon, causing the paint to flake and peel.
